Volunteer Opportunities
Our success is only possible with the tireless time and talent of our volunteers. Please consider volunteering in one or more of these areas and contact us with your commitment to fulfill these necessary tasks.
A general volunteer meeting will be held on:
March 9, 2012, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the
Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, Maryland.
The following are the volunteer duties, times and the number of people needed.
***Prior to Race Day***
Thursday, March 15, 2012
- Race Packet Assembly – 10 people
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Location: Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown
Description: Fill the Race packets with fliers, map, bibs and instructions for participants.
Friday, March 16, 2012 - Packet Pickup Duties - 5 people
Time: 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Location: Middletown Memorial Park, Middletown
Description: Help set up, hand out bib numbers, T-shirts, and runner's instructions to pre-registered participants.
***Race Day Duties***
Pre-Race
5K Course Set-Up - 6 people
Time: 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: This entails setting up cones, signs, marking the course at critical points along the entire route.
Event Site Set-Up – 15-20 people
Time: 6:00 AM - 8:30 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: Assist in the overall set-up of tables, chairs, trash cans, signage, decorations, balloons and other equipment and supplies for event.
Fun Run Course Set-Up - 4 people
Time: 6:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: This entails setting up cones to mark the course for the kids.
Green Team/Recycling – 15 people
Time: 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: Volunteers who will help make our event as green as possible by placing recycle containers around the event site and making them available and visible. Volunteers will be asked to supply their own bins and take them home after the event.
Registration and Packet Pickup - 10 people
Time: 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: Are you a cool, calm, detail-oriented person who works well under pressure? Then help us with registration! You will distribute runners' bib numbers, hand out T-shirts, answer questions, accept registration forms and fees, assign Race numbers, and keep area clean and well-stocked. You will be given a brief training session so you know exactly what to do and staff will be available during the registration and packet pickup.
Traffic Control – 20 people
Time: 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM
Location: Middletown Park, Coblentz Road
Description: Volunteers will be strategically stationed to direct participants to available parking lots and park entrance. Assist in maintaining traffic flow and help manage parking. Close lots as they fill. Assist participants in getting to the correct areas of the event for packet pick up, registration, restrooms, etc. Volunteers must be assertive and be able to give direction.
During Race
Site Control Monitor - 2 people
Time: 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Description: Circulate through site, helping to keep site clean and organized. You may be asked to assist in setting up tables, chairs, signage, barricades, removing full garbage bags, etc. Volunteers must have cell phones available at all times during event.
Course Monitors - 25 people
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Description: You will spread out over the entire course, help set-up barricades and cones, and monitor turns and intersections. Monitors help runners stay on course, keep cars off the course, and maintain course safety during the event. These volunteers must be able to physically move small barricades and confident enough to direct a car through a clear street.
Water Station - 15 people
Time: 7 AM - 10 AM
Description: You will fill and hand out cups of water to runners as they run by. After runners go by, you will clean up the station by raking up cups and filling trash bags. Race staff will drop off and pick up supplies before and after the Race. Race staff will assist you with station set-up and Race-day training.
Finish Line - 10 people
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Description: Positioned at the finish line, these individuals assist with timing. Finish line volunteers also direct and assist runners to water and refreshments as well as assist medical personnel if there is a runner in distress.
Kids' Fun Run - 5 people
Time: 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Location: Baseball Field, Middletown Park
Description: Volunteers cheer on our youngest athletes. You will also hand out a medal to each child who crosses the finish line.
Kid’s Zone Craft & Face-Painting – 10 people
Time: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Description: Volunteers will provide an age appropriate craft for kids to complete. Set-up craft table w/ supplies, assist kids with completion of craft, clean up after event. Volunteers will provide age appropriate face painting for kids. Set-up station w/ supplies, paint faces or hands of kids, clean up after event. Temporary Tattoos may be another option.
Post-Race
Refreshments - 10 people
Time: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Description: You will prepare and serve the post-race refreshments of bananas, apples, bagels, etc., and help with clean up after the race.
Race Tear-Down - 20 people
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Description: Following the Race, all materials will be broken down and loaded on trucks for return and storage. Volunteers will break-down tables, tents, chairs, trash cans and banners. This activity may require some heavy lifting. All cones from the 5K course and Fun Run will need to be collected after the event.
